In the Studio: Wavelength (Scarborough, ME)

Had a four hour session two Saturday's ago (December 3rd) with The Wavelength Band. This group started over fifteen years ago now. They are a very well practiced and talented group. They primarily perform at weddings and private functions all over the state of Maine and even make their way into the rest of New England several times a year. If you are looking for a band to keep your party going strong these guys are the band to hire.

I attacked this session with a very simple mind set. I took advantage of direct input and their individual keyboard and guitar patches. This is what makes this band stand out in such a unique way, as they play covers from a number of decades and rely on such versitility. For the drums I went with a version of the Glynn Johns method. I used only three microphones and decided to go without a snare mic as the right OH was placed directly above it anyways. I was aiming to record the drums as a whole instrument verses isolating the different parts. This seemed to be an appropriate tactic as the band played a large variety of genres including punchy rock and roll tunes to jazzy ballads.
